Night Shoot: Mother's Rest After Dark

The yellow station set glowed all night. A Mother's Rest police car waited out front, an officer crossed the deck, and a car came bursting out of the haze, more than once. Here's what we saw from public areas.

The car

A police car from a town that doesn't exist

Mother's Rest is the fictional town at the heart of Lee Child's novel Make Me, which Reacher Season 5 adapts. So MRPD reads as the town's own police department, made for the show.

The deck

An officer on the deck, gun raised

Seen From across the way, we watched a couple of takes of an officer crossing the station deck with a gun raised.

It was very dark. In our phone footage the deck almost disappears, so we brightened the clip to make the deck visible. The figure is still small and grainy at this distance. That's what night filming looks like from the sidelines.

Brightened clip: shadows lifted, light noise reduction and a touch of contrast. Nothing added or removed.

Seen The full deck take, uncut. All two minutes as we filmed it, lightly brightened, with the faint set sound. The officer raises his gun at about 0:02 and walks across the platform to point it at someone at the far end. A second take, from about 1:06 to 1:28, plays out the same scene. The zoomed-in versions are just below.

Seen Take 1, zoomed in. From 0:01.8 to 0:22.5 of the full take: arms up in the lit doorway, then the walk along the platform to the far end. Zoomed into our 4K footage and brightened, with the set sound.

The close-ups are enlarged from our 4K phone footage, brightened and lightly denoised so the figures show up. Nothing is added. It was very dark, so even zoomed in the officer is a dark, soft figure and the gun itself is too small to make out.

Roll & cut

Rolling, a long wait, headlights, cut

Down by the tracks, the night settled into the rhythm of a film set. A call, a quiet wait in the haze, headlights, a car tearing past the parked vehicles, then a call to stop. Then again.

We don't know how these moments fit into the story, and we're not guessing. We only describe what we saw and heard.
